කොඬොල් අලයේ කථා වස්තුව/ Story of the Purple Yam

අසල්වැසියෙකුගේ ගෙදර ගිය අම්මාට පැළ කිරීම සඳහා අඟල් එකහමාරක් තරම් දිග පුංචි කොඬොල් අල කෑල්ලක් ලැබුණි. ආපසු ගෙදර එන විට අම්මාගේ අතේ කුඩ, මල් පැළ ඇතුළු බඩු ගොඩක් තිබුණි. ඒවා නිසා ගේට්ටුව ඇර ගැනීමට අත නිදහස් නැති බව අම්මාට තේරුණි. අම්මා කළේ අතේ තිබුණු බඩු පළමුව ගේට්ටුවට උඩින් වත්ත ඇතුළට විසි කිරීමයි. ඉන්පසුව ගේට්ටුව ඇරගෙන ඇතුළට ඇවිත් විසි කළ දෑ එකතු කරන්නට වූවාය.

බොහොම ආසාවෙන් ගෙනා කොඬොල් අල කෑල්ල ආගිය අතක් නැති බව අම්මාට තේරුණේ මෙවෙලේය. ඇය කොතරම් හෙව්වත් හමු වුණේ කොඬොල් අලය නොවේ. අන්තිමේ හෙවිල්ලෙන් හෙම්බත් වූ අම්මා එය හිතින් අත් හැර දැම්මාය.

දින සති බවට පත් වෙද්දී ගේට්ටුව ළඟම අඹ ගස මැදි කර තනා ඇති මල් රවුම ඇතුළේ අමුතු පැළයක් හිස ඔසවා ඇති බව අම්මාට පෙණුනි. කොඬොල් පැළ දුටු මතින් අඳුනා ගැනීමට අම්මා සමත්ය. ඇය වහා කොඬොල් පැළයට සාත්තු කිරීම ඇරඹුවාය. කලකට පසු, හරියටම කිවහොත් කොඬොල් අල මෝරන දෙසැම්බර් - ජනවාරි කාලයේ, එහි අස්වනු නෙළා ගෙන වස විස නැති පෝෂණීය ආහාරයක් දරුවන්ට දීමට ඇයට හැකි විය.

While visiting a neighbour, mother got a tiny bulb of a purple yam (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dioscorea_alata) to be planted in her garden. As she was returning home, her hands were full with things that she couldn't open the gate right away. So she threw the things over the gate first and then went in. Once she was inside she started collecting her things which came flying in before her.

At this moment, mother realized the piece of purple yam had gone missing. She looked and looked and looked for it some more but to no avail. Finally with a heavy heart, she gave up.

As days turned into weeks, mother's eyes were caught by an intruder. It was a tiny plant under the mango tree near the gate. She did not need time to recognize the purple yam plant. She started caring for it. After several months, to be exact in December-January season when the purple yam harvest is ready to be consumed, she dug it out and served her children a nutritional, agro-chemical-free meal .
