A few years ago, I was interviewing Champika Liyanaarachchi who
was at that time just appointed Editor-Daily Mirror, becoming the first
female editor in a national daily in any language in Sri Lanka and the
youngest ever editor being just over 30. Explaining some point she said
"today we cannot even imagine how our predecessors published newspapers
without internet". Today while trying to open some old CDs, wasting so
much time & energy, I suddenly remembered Champika's words. I really
cannot imagine how we ourselves managed with slow floppy disks &
CDs a few years back! Floppy disks were anyway a nightmare because they
always refused to open if I touched them, making me subject to teasing
for being static (though it wasn't my fault but the disk's). CDs also
died a natural death after a while. Thankfully now we have more
comfortable technologies for data transferring and storage. But I'm sure
in the future people will wonder how we managed without the
technologies they'd be using.
